ABOUT

Background

The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority estimates that between 50,000 and 60,000 people are homeless each night in Los Angeles.  The rate of homelessness has increased by 23% in the last year, and more people live below the poverty line in LA than anywhere else in California. The amount of people living in adverse conditions are rising, but most remain ill-equipped to deal with dangerous circumstances when they arise.
Building Heroes was formed with several goals in mind: to provide the underserved population with the knowledge to recognize and intervene when a medical emergency arrises, to help lower the amount of pre-hospital deaths in that community, and to better understand what is an effective way to teach these populations.

Interactive Teaching:

We go into underserved communities with interactive teaching modules aimed at empowering everyone to make a difference in their community if an emergency arises

Our Partners:

We are partnered with many clinics and transitional living centers in the Los Angeles area to provide classes and resources to their members:

  • Venice Family Clinic

  • People Assisting Homeless (PATH)

  • St. Joseph's Center

  • DIY Girls

  • People's Concern

  • Alexandria House

Our Goals:

We hope that through our interactive lessons, free CPR certifications, and allocation of important resources that we can empower people to help during an emergency before EMS arrives; eventually reducing the number of pre-hospital deaths in LA County.
